Welcome to bestvalueHE
Before you accept a place...
...on a university course, you might want to ask universities some searching questions.
You might begin with "Could you please send me a complete record of all occupations, employers, locations and salaries for the 2004 and 2005 graduate cohorts of this course?"
Surprisingly, you can obtain complete lists of graduates' job titles, employers, salaries and locations for individual HE courses across the UK. The data is collected in HESA's longstanding national survey - Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education, previously known as the First Destinations Survey.
Then ask about the drop-out rate "Can you give me a figure for the percentage of all students initially enrolled in those cohorts who successfully completed this course in those years?"
...and how the course will get you a the job you want when you graduate "Can you describe how your course is improving graduates' employability, including the arrangements for teaching and assessing career management and for supporting students' professional development?"
For obvious reasons, many universities are a bit cagey about this information. Fortunately a group of academics and HE advisers are teaching UCAS applicants how to prise these facts and figures out of universities.
You're about to spend around £33,512 on your higher education. Spend a few minutes turning the most expensive mistake of your life into your lifetime best investment.
